COCOS ISLANDS  COSTA RICA

COCOS ISLAND — Costa Rica (May-Nov)

One of the last truly wild places on Earth.

Located 550 kilometers off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Cocos Island is widely regarded as one of the greatest dive destinations in the world — a remote, UNESCO World Heritage Site where the ocean still belongs to the animals.

Cocos is not a dive trip. It's an expedition.

Reachable only by a 36-hour liveaboard crossing, this isolated seamount sits at the convergence of four major ocean currents, creating a nutrient-rich upwelling that attracts pelagic life on a breathtaking scale. Here, the sheer volume of marine megafauna is unlike anywhere else on the planet.

What you'll encounter:

Schools of hundreds of scalloped hammerhead sharks circling cleaning stations at dawn. Whitetip reef sharks carpeting the rocky seafloor so thickly you can barely see the bottom. Whale sharks drifting through the blue with effortless grace. Manta rays, silky sharks, Galapagos sharks, tiger sharks, dolphins, turtles, and yellowfin tuna moving in massive, coordinated formations through the current.

This is big animal diving at its absolute finest.

The experience:

All dives at Cocos are done from pangas (small inflatable boats), descending into open blue water and drifting with the current. Conditions can be challenging — strong surges, limited visibility, and cold upwellings are part of the experience. This is a destination for divers who are comfortable in the open ocean and hungry for something extraordinary.

The island's remoteness means no crowds, no resorts, and no distractions — just you, your dive team, and one of the most spectacular underwater ecosystems on the planet.

Best season: Year-round, with peak hammerhead activity from June to November.

Recommended experience level: Advanced open water, minimum 50 logged dives. Strong current experience recommended.
