FAQ's

  • Which diving certification do I need to join an expedition?
You must have an Open Water Diver certificate or equivalent and have logged at least 30 dives. On our expeditions to Indonesia, Maldives, Mexico and Portugal we require all divers to be Advanced Open Water or equivalent. Carlu Travel also recommends that you are a certified Nitrox Diver. *You can get certified as a Nitrox Diver during our expeditions – we will be happy to advise you!
  • I am not travelling with a dive buddy; can I still dive with you?
Sure, of course! In fact, many solo travelers from different countries join us. Carlu Travel will always find a suitable diving buddy for you! Most likely, after taking part in our trips, you will make a lot of new friends who share the same passion for the sea and travel as you!
  • Do I need my own equipment?
It is definitely an advantage to have your own equipment. However, on all our expeditions it is possible to rent equipment (at an additional cost).
  • Are flights included in the price?
No, flights are not included in the price. When you book a diving expedition with CarluTravel, you become part of a WhatsApp group where, among other things, we share flight references and details so that we all fly more or less on the same days.
  • How do I know which expedition is best for me?
Which expedition is best for you depends on your diving experience, budget and certification. But there are a few other factors that determine which expedition is best for you. Fill out this form and we will advise you free of charge.
  • Do I need insurance?
Before you go on a trip, you should get insurance! Carlu Travel strongly recommends: Dive Injury Insurance, Medical Evacuation Insurance and Comprehensive Travel Insurance. It is a condition of your booking with Carlu Travel that you purchase comprehensive dive and travel insurance cover specific to your booking and to bring proof of this with you to show the guides when you check in. You are responsible to check that these include: Dive Injury Insurance: covering all risks, costs and expenses likely to be incurred as a result of a diving injury, including but not limited to re-compression chamber treats, air evacuation, and loss or damage to possessions. This insurance should cover all scuba diving or water sports activities that you are likely to undertake during your trip, and Medical Evacuation Insurance: covering all risks, costs and expenses likely to arise from a diving or non-diving injury requiring your evacuation to a place of specialist care, including but not limited to low altitude air evacuation; specialist treatment and direct; and indirect losses; and Comprehensive Travel Insurance: valid at the time of booking to cover any pre-departure cancellations should you have to cancel your trip for an insured reason such as illness or serious accident, any changes or cancellation to your travel plans, loss or damage to your luggage and contents. You must be satisfied that your insurance fully covers all your personal requirements including pre-existing medical conditions, cancellation charges, medical expenses and repatriation in the event of accident or illness, diving injuries and medical evacuation. Should diving insurance not be obtained prior to your departure, it can be arranged on arrival with our Partner Dive Assure. Pricing information can be found on the relevant product price list on our website. If you choose to travel without adequate insurance cover, Carlu Travel will not be liable for any losses howsoever arising, in respect of which insurance cover would otherwise have been available.
  • If I have been diving, how long should I wait before flying?
PADI recommends 12 hours before flying after 1 dive, 18 hours if you have done multiple dives over multiple days. Carlu Travel recommends you to have 24 hours clear before flying.
  • Are there any rules I need to adhere to?
Carlu Travel is extremely environmentally aware and asks that you refrain from taking gloves when you dive. Do not touch, ride, feed, catch or harass anything you find underwater. Do not come back on the boat with less than 30 bar in your tank, do not ascend or descend very close to the reef or ascend or descend down the mooring line. Be aware of your surroundings. No solo diving, no decompression diving, use good buoyancy control when using cameras. And that means we all have a great dive.
  • I haven't dived for a while; do I need to take part in a course?
Depends what level you are, how many dives you’ve got and when you last dived. If you are novice with not very many dives and not dived for a year, you would need to talk to your local dive school about taking part in a scuba review or PADI Reactivate programme. This should be completed prior to your arrival on board, signed by an instructor and shown to your Carlu guide before you start diving. If you are more experienced, maybe you are PADI Advanced or Rescue (or equivalent) with 50-60 dives, you haven’t dived for maybe 18 months we may suggest a check dive, which is part of the daily diving activity but you just refresh 4 basic skills. Takes about ten minutes, that’s all. Every diver, regardless of their qualification or experience will be required to participate in a check-dive, normally the first dive and prior to commencing normal diving activities. This dive allows you to orientate yourself in your diving environment and acquaint yourself with your equipment. In the interests of safety, Carlu Travel reserves the right to restrict diving activities if the instructor has any concerns regarding diver safety.
  • Medicals and Self-Declaration
All guests are required to sign a self-declaration medical on check in and before any activity such as, but not limited to, diving, snorkelling, swimming, etc. If you are taking part in a PADI course, you are required to a sign a Diver Medical prior to starting the course. In both cases, if you have, or think you have, any of the medical conditions listed you will need signed clearance from a doctor valid within 12 months of your planned liveaboard or diving holiday. Where doctor’s clearance is needed, we ask you to arrange this before arrival where possible and to bring it with you to avoid any delays, additional costs or even missing the trip. For students under the age of 18, all paperwork needs to be signed by a parent or guardian.
  • I've lost my certification card; can I still dive with you?
If you are a PADI or SSI diver, don’t worry, we can check their computer database online.
  • What is the maximum depths I can dive to?
Your maximum diving depth will be dependent on your level of training and experience. It is your responsibility to check what depths your insurance policy covers you for before your arrival. The maximum depth for our diving expeditions is 30 meters with an equally qualified buddy.
